Long Cold Winter

It's been a long cold winter here in Owyhee County. It's a relatively slow time for the farmers as pretty much everything is frozen up. But starting in February things begin to come out of their long dormancy. First is always the winter wheat.

It's called winter wheat because it's planted the preceding fall and can, weather permitting, grow during the winter. Because it grows near a protected part near the base of the plant (as all grasses do) wheat is very resistant to most natural occurances.
